Operation 300

In response to the unimaginable devastation rendered upon the Abaco Islands by Hurricane Dorian, citizens and local businesses of the Treasure Coast sprang into action looking for ways to help. While the storm was still spinning over the Bahamas, two local relief organizations  –  Operation 300 based out of Witham Field in Stuart and Missionary Flights International, based out of Treasure Coast International Airport in Fort Pierce – went to work immediately, creating donation drop-offs, organizing transportation and enlisting an army of volunteers to organize, prioritize, prep and load the incredible  volume of donations soon to be pouring in from our generous community and destined for the Abaco Islands.

Operation 300

Across the board, social media played a key part in getting the word out and disseminating important information. Shultz Communications Florida is very fortunate to work with a number of big-hearted businesses who volunteered their social media channels and advertising budgets to help spread the word. We would like to recognize Hillmoor Optical, Patrick Exterminating and Fruits and Roots Vegan Café for helping create a highly successful social media campaign to share the efforts of these important relief organizations and enlist help.

Missionary Flights International

Utilizing a series of compelling video messages over the course of three weeks, we were able to reach an audience of over 13,000 local social media users, posting web links to the organizations and ways to help. Many of those reached passed the message along to their friends, growing the audience exponentially. GoPro time-lapse video played a key role in the production, allowing us to remotely capture key activities while continuing to assist with staging and loading efforts.

The task to rebuild the towns and reunite the people of the Abacos will be massive and long-term. These organizations are committed to helping see it through with ongoing collections, transport and volunteers on the ground. To find out how you can help, go to http://op300.org/treasure-coast-abacos-relief-project  or https://www.missionaryflights.org/relief. Our neighbors in the Bahamas deserve our help. Had the storm jogged a hundred mile to the west, it could have been us.
